Challenges of Innovation at Scale
This session highlights the challenges and occasional failures that occur when scaling digital innovations. From Nigeria, participants will learn about unintended consequences of migrating from paper based records to digital technologies in a hospital setting as well as about strategies, approaches and tools for evaluation and improvement of adopted digital health technologies. From Tanzania, participants will learn about how limited country ownership, the design of the financial incentives, lack of coordination among levels in the health system, and a technology-driven (as opposed to process driven) implementation created bottlenecks and prevented an SMS-based supply chain program for antimalarials to be adopted at the country level. Finally, participants will learn about the limitations of the Principles for Digital Development during rapid scale-up.
